THE JEWISH YEAR
The Jewish calendar, as it now exists, is based on astronomical principles.
It differs from the ordinary calendar because its unit is the month, not the
year. It takes the moon 29 ½ days to circle the earth. As the
calendar month must have an integral number of days, some Jewish months have 29
days and some 30.
Twelve lunar months compose a year and comprise altogether 354 days.
The solar year or the time it takes the earth to make one revolution about the
sun, is 365 ¼ days, or roughly 11 days more. In order to harmonize the
lunar and solar years a thirteenth month, called Second Adar, is added in the
Jewish calendar seven times in 19 years, i.e., on the 3rd, 6th, 8th, 11th, 14th,
17th, and 19th. Each of these years is a leap year.
The Jews had two New Years, the Civil, in Ethanim or Tisrj (October) and the
Sacred, in Abib or Nisan (April), the month in which they left Egypt under
Moses.
The following table gives the months in order, beginning with the Sacred New
Year. The numbers in parentheses are those of the months according to the
civil reckoning; and the modern names given are approximately the corresponding
months according to our calendar. The exact period in modern terms differs
each year.

Names of the Months and of the Days of the Week
The practice of naming the days of the week is derived from Egyptian astronomy.
It did not become firmly established in our civilization until the times of the
Theodosius at the end of the fourth century A.D. Curiously enough, it was
the Roman custom of lettering the successive days of nundinum (a period of eight
days) which gave rise to the modern custom in some churches whereby the
dominical letter is determined. The days of the week are lettered from A
to G just as the Romans lettered the days of a nundinum from A to H.
According to Egyptian astronomers the sun and the moon were planets and the
order of the planets in terms of the distance from earth was as follows:
Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon. One hour of each
day, beginning with the first, was consecrated to each of these “planets”.
The whole day was consecrated to the planet to which belonged the first hour.
If the first is consecrated to the Sun, to which belongs the first hour,
then the first hour of the next day will belong to the Moon and the day will be
the moon’s day, and so on until, after the cycle has been completed, the first
hour of the eighth day will belong to the sun again.
Our names of the days of the week are derived from Anglo-Saxon names and these
in turn are named for the Saxon gods which correspond to the Roman gods for whom
the days were named. The Roman names, of course, have survived in Spanish,
French, Italian, and other languages.
The days of Mars was called the day of Tiw, the god of war.
The day of Mercury was called the day of Woden, chief of the gods, whose
attributes corresponded more nearly to those of the Roman Mercury than of
Jupiter.
The day of Jupiter was called the day of Thor, the god of Thunder.
The day of Venus was call the day of Frigg, queen of the gods.
The seventh day is still called the day of Saturn, the sower of seed.
THE CHURCH OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST has great apprehension of using pagan
names of months and days.
We suffer this burden while we are in the world, but are constantly reminded
that we are not of the world. Yet we tolerate these nomenclatures merely
as tools of communications with the outside world.
We would strongly urge the saints of God against conforming to the use of
honoring idols, by calling the names of the days and moths after these pagan
deities, and be transforming to the more real concept of the First day, Second
day, etc. and apply this method also to the months.
JANUARY was named from Janus, an old Roman god.
FEBRUARY was named from the Februs, the expiatory ceremonies which the Romans
held in honor of the dead of this month.
MARCH was named from the Roman god Mars who, at the time of the naming of the
month, was primarily a god of Agriculture; the symbol of spring-time and of
youth. It was only after the artificial identification of Roman gods with
Greek gods took place the Mars became the god of war, the counterpart of Ares.
APRIL is derived from the same root as the Latin aperire which means “to open.”
Thus April is the month of the opening buds and flowers.
MAY is of uncertain origins.
JUNE may have been name from the Roman goddess Juno, or from Latin junior
“younger.”
JULY, originally Quinctilis, was renamed for Julius Caesar, who was born in that
month.
AUGUST, originally Sextilis, was renamed from the honorary title of the Roman
Emperor Augustus, who was born in that month.
